Exercise vs. Puzzle

February 21, 2018Original blog post

The same algebra problem twice: stated as bare equations it's a boring exercise, but dressed up as a person's age and their cat's it becomes an intriguing puzzle. (Answer: 15 and 5.)

Transcript

[Exercise] "x is triple y, but x+5 is double y+5." "Lovely. I'm very happy for your numbers."

[Puzzle] "I'm triple my cat's age. But in 5 years, I'll be only double its age." "Well, I say! A mystery of feline chronology!"
