The Four Core Challenges of Games
Four kinds of challenges that games pose: physical skill, reading people, overcoming bad probability instincts, and solving NP-hard problems with heuristics (whatever that means).
Transcript
[Title] "THE FOUR CORE CHALLENGES OF GAMES" 1. Mastering your physical reactions (e.g., making a header in soccer; timing a jump in Super Mario Bros.) · 2. Understanding other people (e.g., bluffing in Poker; detecting a lie in Mafia) · 3. Overcoming our own bad instincts about probability (e.g., whether to bet in blackjack; whether to re-roll in Yahtzee) · 4. Solving problems perceived as NP-hard using heuristics (e.g.… wait, what?)
Framework of the four core challenges from Raph Koster.
